Reading through the book it says the four most important features of Andean worldview are collectivity, reciprocity, transformation, and essence. The Andean worldview was very different than modern views on social structure. The way the build their society is amazing and very interesting. They really value the way they live. They believed in helping anyone, if they were better than them or not. I wish our world was more like that today. Collectivity is the idea that the whole is more important than its individual parts. Transformation is the idea that existence is constantly changing cyclically. Life leads to death which leads to life, the world is constantly revolving. The concept of essence is the belief of focusing on the process of gaining a result, instead of the actual result achieved from this process. If more of us thought like this today I believe that society would be so much different. Maybe even war free.

  1. I agree, I think our society could benefit from adopting some of the Andean viewpoints. People would be less caught up in their own individual successes and problems and take time to care for others and humankind as a whole.

  2. Natalie and Jason,

I guess that I have a little different take on contemporary society as it is compared to the ancient Andean lifeway. I agree with your observation that many people around the world could benefit by less emphasis on our individual goals and success. However, I do feel that many millions of people from countries throughout the globe do have a collective and reciprocol outlook on their fellow men and women. As an example, think about the one year anniversary this week of the devastating earthquake in Japan. People from all over the world offered very generously a variety of aid in the form of rescue assistance, scientific expertise, technology, food, money and good will. It is a fact that we can rarely aid someone else unless our own primary needs are met, too. I suspect that this was true during the lives of the ancient people of the Andes.
